Dr. Bakhach

Social Dedication

Since his pre-medical school and beside his commitment to studying medicine, Dr. Bakhach was very early involved in the protection and defense of Medical Students’ rights and the respect and compliance with the free practice of physicians. He was actively involved in the strike of the French Medical Students in 1982 which lasted approximately the whole academic year and ended by the deflection of the concerned Ministries of Education and Health giving to the Medical Students what they were fighting for.

During his fellowship, Dr. Bakhach participated in many humanitarian missions in Peshawar – Afghanistan organized by “Plast aid”, a German non-governmental organization, and in Niger and Mali organized by “Les Enfants du Noma” to treat children affected by the Noma disease and more recently, he was involved in the program supervised by “Medicine sans Frontières” to treat Syrian refugees affected by war and blast injuries to their extremities, nerves and face.

Part of his work in the American University of Beirut Medical Center is dedicated to treat patients with very low income and suffering from congenital malformations, accident deformities and war injuries. He works closely with many non-governmental organizations as “Inara”, “Dar El Fatwa”, “Charity Hands” and others in order to provide their financial clearance and medical management.

Dr. Bakhach also felt a responsibility to his Melkite Greek Catholic community scattered across the world and in search for their roots. With a group of Melkite defenders, Dr. Bakhach co-founded in France “The World Melkite Greek Catholic Council”; an association dedicated to reconnect all the Melkite Greek Catholics around the world. He also created a website www.melkitecouncil.com which facilitates the inter-connections between the different members and acts as a platform where they can share knowledge and ideas.

Dr. Youssef Bakhach discussing hand surgery in Lebanon.

Hand surgery is a distinct specialty, often shared with orthopedic, plastic, and reconstructive surgery. The hand is frequently overlooked and relegated to a secondary role, despite being fundamental to the human body and holding a special symbolic significance.

Its importance is comparable to that of other external organs, such as the face. It serves as the link between a person and the outside world, the first point of contact with others. It is the first to express anger as well as joy; it is both the recipient and the giver.
