Medical Achievements For Dr. Bakhach

Dr. Bakhach is Professor of Clinical Surgery in the Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery department and he is the Head of Hand & Reconstructive Microsurgery Unit at the American University of Beirut Medical Center, Lebanon. Prior to his appointment at AUBMC, he served as Consultant at the Aquitaine Institute in Bordeaux-France and worked for different hospitals in Bekaa, specifically those in Zahle district.

He is the author of more than 90 publications and book chapters and has given more than 220 lectures and presentations worldwide. He described 9 innovations in the field of the Reconstructive Surgery and they are used regularly for the benefit of the patients. He performed a first worldwide surgery of its kind by temporary implanting amputated fingers on the foot in order to save them. In 1998, he conducted experimental studies on the cryogenic preservation of human organs, and more recently, in 2014, Dr. Bakhach performed a first surgical achievement in Lebanon by transplanting a part of the second toe to restore an injured index finger in a 16-year-old-boy saving the patient hand instead of amputating the finger as proposed by others.

He is as an active member for several Scientific Societies and Federations, and an executive board member for many of them. He co-founded the Pan Arab Federation for Surgery of the Hand in 2016 and the Pan Arab Federation for Reconstructive Microsurgery in 2017 and was elected during its first meeting in September 2018 in Beirut – Lebanon as its first President. In 2019, he was appointed Secretary of the Lebanese Order of Physicians Continuing Medical Education Committee LOP – CME and Special Senior Consultant to the Lebanese Order of Physicians President for Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Medicine Affairs in Lebanon.

Dr. Youssef Bakhach discussing hand surgery in Lebanon.

Hand surgery is a distinct specialty, often shared with orthopedic, plastic, and reconstructive surgery. The hand is frequently overlooked and relegated to a secondary role, despite being fundamental to the human body and holding a special symbolic significance.

Its importance is comparable to that of other external organs, such as the face. It serves as the link between a person and the outside world, the first point of contact with others. It is the first to express anger as well as joy; it is both the recipient and the giver.

Reconstruction of the smallest joint of the human body by microsurgery

In a groundbreaking achievement in the field of Reconstructive Microsurgery in Lebanon and the region, the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC) successfully conducted the first proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint reconstruction surgery on a damaged ring finger. The surgery was performed by AUBMC’s team of highly skilled surgeons, led by Dr. Youssef Bakhach, president of the Lebanese Health Orders President Association (HOPA) and a renowned Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon specialized in hand and microsurgery at the Department of Surgery.

The patient had suffered from trauma to the right middle and ring fingers due to a motor vehicle accident. The main joint of the patient’s ring finger was completely destroyed, deformed with an impaired function of the total hand.
During the procedure, the principal joint of the patient’s right ring finger was reconstructed using the same joint from the toe with microsurgical connection of the vascular pedicles. Harvested with the tendons and the nourishing vessels, this small joint was transferred and fixed, re-establishing its normal blood supply. The surgery was particularly challenging due to the extremely small diameter of the vessels involved and, the small size of the joint and structures transferred, requiring high precision and skill. Unlike traditional procedures, this intricate hand surgery effectively restores function, mobility and shape, making it an optimal treatment option for severely impaired fingers.
This successful hand surgery attests to the outstanding capabilities and expertise of AUBMC’s hand trauma surgeons who are continuously committed to integrating the latest techniques in their surgical practice. This trailblazing achievement will pave the way to the establishment of the Hand Surgery Centre of Excellence at AUBMC, the first center of its kind in Lebanon and the region to better serve the community and the patients.
